Project description

For the Tabaski celebration, the country depends on imported sheep from neighboring countries to meet market demand. In 2023, 854,326 sheep were counted in markets and sales points nationwide, of which 246,165 (29%) came from imports. The program aims to achieve national self-sufficiency in sheep through:

Support for the development of pastoral livestock systems;
Support for the establishment or expansion of 100 breeding farms operating under semi-intensive or intensive systems;
Intensification of production through the promotion of improved sheepfolds.

Overall Objective:

Achieve national self-sufficiency in sheep by 2030.

Specific Objectives:

Improve lambing rates and weight gain in sheep;
Strengthen the technical and organizational capacities of actors in the sector;
Improve market conditions for small ruminants.

Expected results

A cumulative additional production of 1,445,351 rams for Tabaski by 2030
A cumulative additional production of 2,643,021 sheep, all sexes and breeds combined, corresponding to 104% national demand coverage by 2030
9,000 direct jobs created (2 jobs per improved sheepfold and per fattening unit).
