Project description

The “Local Consumption Month” (MCL) is a Directive of the Council of Ministers of Trade of UEMOA, adopted on 25 October 2019, to strengthen intra-community trade, reduce dependence on imports from third countries, and create conditions favourable to the development of the economies of UEMOA Member States. The concept of “Local Consumption”, according to UEMOA, covers all goods and services of community origin in line with the applicable rules of origin.

Overall Objective

  • Increase the visibility and promotion of local products

Specific Objectives

  •  Intensify trade between UEMOA Member States
  •  Ensure food sovereignty and promote local endogenous growth within Member States

  • Dependence on imports, the trade deficit and foreign currency outflows are reduced
  • Local and regional value chains are developed, strengthening the economic fabric with champion enterprises
  • Competitiveness and population resilience to the high cost of living are strengthened
  • Wealth and employment, especially for youth and women, are created
  • The local economy is strengthened, fostering inclusive endogenous growth, food security and economic sovereignty
  • Economic dynamism is stimulated, helping reduce social inequalities and poverty nationally and in rural areas
